Happy School Holidays Guys, so we just got back from a fun filled few days in Ballarat, this is the second year we have been to the (July) Ballarat Winter Festival, My sister Kate and her two girls Lila & Harper came with us this time and they were so excited because Ted & Emmy had been telling them all about Sovereign Hill, the Winter Wonderlights & the Wild life park for weeks now.
The Ballarat Winter Festival runs from now until July 29th. Ballarat is literally and hour and twenty mins from Melbourne, so very easy to get to and so much to see and do.
Here is a little run through of what we did…
We arrived to our 3 bedroom apartment at the QUEST Ballarat just after lunch. The apartment was great, spacious, clean, warm and centrally located in Dawson St North, we quickly unpacked, the kids chose their bedrooms and we were off to Sovereign Hill.
Sovereign Hill is Australia’s foremost outdoor museum, Sovereign Hill re-creates Ballarat’s first ten years after the discovery of gold in 1851 when thousands of international adventurers rushed to the Australian goldfields in search of fortune. By day, Sovereign Hill is where Australia’s history comes to life! It’s just like stepping back in time – from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the Red Hill Gully Diggings where you can pan for real gold and it’s yours to keep! And during July, Christmas trees and colourful decorations will line the Main Street. ‘Hands-on’ activities for children, a full theatre program, faux snow falls and delicious treats bringing Christmas cheer to all.
At 5.45, as the sun sets and the snowflakes fall, Main Street is transformed by sparkling grand-scale images and bright Winter Wonderlights dancing along the beautiful buildings. The kids loved watching to see where the cheeky Gingerbread man would pop up during the display. It really is a beautiful event and a must see.
GOLDEN CITY HOTEL – DINNER
Then we headed to the Golden City Hotel for dinner, this hotel is in walking distance to our hotel. The kids loved the pasta and pizza. I had the mushroom gnocchi and it was YUM. Kate had the risotto which she also loved. We also had a few reds while the kids coloured, perfect end to a great day.
WEBSTER’S MARKET & CAFE – BREAKFAST
After a great sleep we headed to Webster’s Market & Cafe for a yummy breakfast. The waffles with ice-cream & fairy floss were a massive hit, as you can imagine. And the poached eggs & crispy bacon went down a treat.
ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT
After Breaky we popped around to the Art Gallery of Ballarat to check out the Light Exhibit.
We have been here a few times and its fabulous, the kids were in Kangaroo heaven, there are literally friendly roos everywhere. We also saw Emu’s, Meerkats, Dingos, Koala’s and more. The kids also loves toasting marshmallows by the open fire.
We have been lucky enough to borrow a new 7 seater Ford Everest for our school holidays travels, it made the trip to Ballarat super easy as there is lots of room, the 6 of us and all of our things fit easily.
A very BIG thank you to Tamara, Visit Ballarat and all of the places that helped look after us on our Winter mini getaway, we all had the best time.
